船上的三桅分别是干什么的？

三桅是前桅（foremast），较矮，主桅（mainmast），较高，以及后桅（mizzenmast）。

最初，前桅挂一大三角帆。后来，在船首置一杆后送，上挂一方形斜杠帆，这就可使前桅后移并增加高度。

后又增加了一些横桅索来做辅助用途，增加梯索（系于横桅索上）取代了以往用于攀缘桅杆的木梯。在行驶过程中，由于感觉到驾驭大帆太累，结果导致了一系列小帆的使用。

先是有些大船在主桅上挂三面帆，从下到上依次为主帆（course）、顶帆（topsail）和上桅帆（topgallant），后来船的每桅上一般都有三截帆。也出现了四桅船，前桅挂若干方形帆，后三桅则挂大三角帆。
