像我们的美国林肯大学，就是美国的公立大学。

社区大学属于公立学院的范畴，也就是拿国家补助的，来这里读书的人最大的特点是家庭都不富裕（留学生除外），因为社区大学的费用一般只有公立大学的4分之一或者更少，像华盛顿州最好的大学华盛顿大学一年的学费大概是美元1万5左右，而社区大学大概就美元2000-3000左右，而且还能拿政府的补助或者助学贷款。其次呢，来读社区大学的人多半是在外打工的或者养家带孩子，美国的小孩一般18岁都出去独立，自己打工赚学费，所以还是很辛苦的。社区大学中非裔和拉美裔的较多，而且年龄层有16岁到80岁都有，有很多还是家庭主妇，另外高中生和一般的大学本科生可以在学校申请来社区大学拿课。关于学分和学位问题在社区学院可以选择转学到一般大学或者是直接毕业。在加州，一般社区大学可以转一般大学（很一般，比社区大学好不了多少），私立大学（大部分都比较好），州立大学（比较好的大学），加州大学（很好的大学），转学的学分要求是80个学分（80 units），在拿满80个学分的时候还需要相应的修一些课程，在我们加州要求修一定等级的英文写作课，数学和科学类，社会学和人文科学类以及外语，还有像政治和历史类，而且还需要修满一些专业课程，总共加起来80个学分，超过了80学分仍按80学分计算。这80学分代表你你在一般大学学士学位两年的学分，一般大学需要160个学分（部分专业要求更多）才能毕业，等你赚到一般大学后再修完剩下的80个学分即可毕业。当然80个学分在社区大学也是可以毕业的，按照毕业所需的学分和课程要求修完学分即可申请毕业拿专科文凭。在加州，专升本不需要类似国内的考试，只需要成绩。这边的成绩称之为GPA，每节课一般是1-4个学分，实验课也算学分，成绩A（〉90）算GPA 4.0 ，B （80-89）3.0，C （70-89）2.0 ，D （60-69）1.0 F （〈 60）0。一般大学有+和-之分，比如A+ 4.3，A- 3.7。D和F都属于不即可failed，但D仍有学分。总GPA是每节课的GPA乘以该节课的学分数，然后把每节课的总GPA加起来就是总GPA，然后除以总学分就是你的平均GPA，这个成绩是专升本需要的。社区大学的学科很多，数理化，政治，历史，生物，社会，经济等等，还有一些特殊的program，什么机械维修，烹饪，护士等等。大多数的转学生都是拿主流课程和专业课程，比较流行的专业像商科类，数学理化工程类，电脑软件类等等。有些冷门专业很可能就是这些社区学院的王牌专业。在美国除了学校排名还有专业排名，很多社区学校的学校综合排名不行，但往往有些个别的专业排名却非常好，而且这些社区学院的这些王牌专业不是专科学位而是本科学位，很多人要打破了头进这些王牌专业。在职场，很多用人单位除了看中学校，更看重这些学校的专业排名，所以不能小看了这些社区学院。社区大学的申请也是有最低门槛的，如果是本国学生需要你高中毕业，如果是申请王牌专业则需要SAT（美国高考），而留学生则需要托福，老托福大概是400-450分左右，新托福IBT大概40吧。如果不够标准，可能需要申请上社区学校的语言课程ESL program，然后通过考试上正式的课程。
